About this project
My late husband Raja spent many decades building an Arabic book collection of around 130 volumes. It was his wish to donate this collection to Austrian libraries. Before the books make their way there, I would like to give his friends the chance to pick out individual books they would like to keep.
This website is meant to give you the opportunity to choose some of the books calmly and in your own time. It is a non-commercial, private project — no sale, no service, no advertising.

Privacy
What is stored here, what for, for how long, and what rights you have.
What data is stored?
For each invited person:
- Name and e-mail address — so we can identify one another
- Personal access code — so that only invited people can get in
- Language preference (German, English or Arabic)
- Which books you have reserved, with timestamp
- Access log (login times and reservation actions, with technical metadata) — the reason for this is given below
What is it used for?
Three things, nothing more:
- Reservation management: So you can see what you have reserved, and so I know on handover day who receives which book.
- Protection against misuse: The access log helps us notice when someone tries to gain unauthorised access.
- Communication: Sending the invitation and the occasional follow-up question.
No external analytics tools, no advertising trackers and no third-party services are used. Apart from a session cookie for the login, no cookies are set.
For how long?
Until all book handovers are complete. What happens to the site after that will be decided at the appropriate time. Your data will under no circumstances be used for purposes other than those described here.
Who has access?
My son Walid and myself, no one else. There is no hosting provider or third party reading along.
Your rights
At any time you may:
- Request information about what is stored about you
- Request corrections to your data
- Have your data completely deleted — even before the project ends
Requests by e-mail to books@alkhalily.net with the subject "Privacy".
Important note on reservations
A reservation in this system is a declaration of intent within the family and circle of friends, not a legally binding contract. There is no entitlement to receive a reserved book, and in the unlikely event that a book does not reach handover, there are no claims for compensation. Handover takes place in person in Vienna. Onward transport is organised by the recipients themselves — whether by picking up in person or sending someone to collect.
